ABC is a 501(c)3, open and voluntary grass roots non-profit corporation of your neighbors and fellow Chautauquans who believe this community has the intellectual curiosity and desire to hear all points of view and perspectives. We believe Chautauquans welcome and respect differing thought to give truth to the values and mission for which Chautauqua stands. We believe Chautauquans rise to the challenge of listening, especially when the message may test one's current beliefs or understandings. To that end, Advocates for Balance in Chautauqua was formed to encourage diversity in our programming. We want all Chautauquans to feel their voices are presented, heard, and respected such that nobody is marginalized and made to feel unwelcome.

During the summer of 2018, a small group gathered to discuss the definition of “diversity and inclusion.” Our thoughts became a vision that encompassed a comprehensive representation of ALL viewpoints. The current programming lacks that inclusiveness that we value deeply. There were few, if any, counterpoints to provide Chautauquans with the benefit of both sides of the story. It was precisely this concern that gave rise to what is truly a grass roots movement. We wanted as much diversity in programming as we aspire to in our own community. We trust Chautauquans want not only their own belief systems echoed from the dais, but also appreciate those of others so that we can better understand and communicate with each other. While we applaud the efforts of the Institution management to promote gender and race diversity, that same zeal does not extend to THOUGHT DIVERSITY.

Hence, we formed a steering committee that identified and vetted speakers with experience and viewpoints that would enhance the programming platform, that would have a broader appeal to attendees.  We brought speakers to Chautauqua who presented to general audiences.  We caucused with the Administration and offered our services and contacts to bring more individuals to the lecture platform at larger venues. We have made substantial progress and so many more Chautauquans who share this vision have joined our group (over 275 and growing!!!).  We invite you to join our group and be part of this exciting endeavor.  Click on the link above entitled "Join" for more information about participating with us.
